Denis Slattery (slattery) > The well-named Rosette Nebula in the constellation Monoceros (NGC 2244 star cluster, NGC 2237 emission nebula) lies at a distance of 5000 light-years and has an apparent diameter of more than 1 degree (over twice the visual 'size' of the full Moon). This image was made from 30 exposures of 5 minutes at ISO 800. Camera: Modified Canon Digital Rebel (clear filter) with IDAS light pollution filter. Telescope: Orion ED80 with Meade 0.63 reducer. Mount: Meade LX200. Autoguiding: ATIK 2C camera on the Meade 8" SCT; GuideDog software. Processed in ImagesPlus and Photoshop CS2.
Denis Slattery (slattery) > The heart of the Milky Way in Saggitarius has this pair of bright nebulae, the Trifid (left) and Lagoon, known as Messier objects M20 and M8. The open cluster M21 is also seen to the left. Taken 7/29/05 with an 80mm refractor and modified Canon 300D camera.
Denis Slattery (slattery) > The Pelican Nebula (IC5070) in Cygnus. Taken with a modified Canon Digital Rebel (300D) with IDAS LPS filter. Orion ED80 refractor with Meade 0.63 reducer, prime focus. Autoguided via the LX200 mount and ATIK 2C webcam with GuideDog. Over two nights, 56 three-minute images were taken at ISO 400 and combined in ImagesPlus. Final processing in Photoshop CS2. Part of the North America Nebula is at left.
Denis Slattery (slattery) > M16 (IC 4703), the Eagle Nebula in the constellation Serpens, has the 'Pillars of Creation' made famous in the Hubble Telescope image. This image was taken with a modified Canon 300D using an IDAS light pollution suppression filter, at the prime focus of an Orion ED80 refractor telescope. Eight images at 3 minutes each were combined using ImagesPlus and processed in Photoshop CS2.
Denis Slattery (slattery) > A wide view of the Orion complex, showing Barnard's Loop encircling the Flame, Horsehead, and Orion Nebulas. This image was made from 30 exposures of 5 minutes at ISO 1600. Canon 350xt modified (clear filter), Canon 70-200 F4L lens at 70mm and f5.0, IDAS light pollution filter. Piggybacked and autoguided on Meade LX200 mount 8" SCT with ATIK 2C camera and Guidemaster. Acquisition, calibration, alignment, combination with ImagesPlus. Processing in Photoshop CS2. North is to the right.
Denis Slattery (slattery) > The Orion Nebula complex in Orion's sword. Messier objects M42 and M43 comprise the main nebula at center below, and NGC1977, the Running Man Nebula, is at top center. This image was made from 37 exposures of 3 minutes and 5 at 30 seconds (for the M42 core), ISO 800. Canon 300D modified (clear filter) with 70-200mm f4L lens set at 200mm and f5. A 67mm IDAS Light Pollution Suppression filter was used on the lens. Processing in ImagesPlus and Photoshop CS2.
Denis Slattery (slattery) > A closer view of the Orion Nebula complex, through an Orion ED80 refractor telescope. This image was made from 25 exposures of 3 minutes at ISO 800 and 10 exposures of 30 seconds (for the bright M42 core). Canon 300D modified (clear filter) and IDAS light pollution suppression filter. A Meade 0.63 focal reducer was used to give a focal ratio of about f/4.5. Processing in ImagesPlus and Photoshop CS2.
Denis Slattery (slattery) > ...And another view of the Orion Nebula and Running Man, this one made 1/13/07 from 35 3-minute exposures at ISO800 through the 80mm refractor using a Canon 350xt modified camera and IDAS light pollution filter. Twelve shorter (20 sec) exposures were combined to provide a proper exposure of the bright Trapezium core. Note the faint red nebulosity that borders the main nebula, particularly on the left.
Denis Slattery (slattery) > The Horsehead and Flame Nebulae, flanking the star Alnitak in Orion's belt, are hard to see visually but give one of the most spectacular photo opportunities in the sky. This image was made from 50 exposures at 3 minutes each, ISO 800. Orion ED80 telescope with 0.63 reducer; Canon 300D modified (clear filter) with 48mm IDAS light pollution filter. Guiding on LX200 mount via ATIK 2C and GuideDog.
M16 (IC 4703), the Eagle Nebula in the constellation Serpens, has the 'Pillars of Creation' made famous in the Hubble Telescope image. This image was taken with a modified Canon 300D using an IDAS light pollution suppression filter, at the prime focus of an Orion ED80 refractor telescope. Eight images at 3 minutes each were combined using ImagesPlus and processed in Photoshop CS2.
